As far as I know, the nodes that make up the Tor network periodically send the directory authorities documents called "routers descriptors," which contain information about themselves. From this information, the directory authorities generate a "consensus.

My question is: Why don't Tor clients directly use the consensus generated by the directory authorities, and instead use the "microdescriptors"?
